Offshore wind installation: Chinese shipyards waiting for the wind to blow?

Polaris Wind Power Network News: It is reported that on July 30, 2020, Norwegian offshore semi-submersible transportation company OHT and its wholly-owned subsidiary Vind Offshore Installation signed a contract with China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) for up to four self-elevating offshore wind power installation vessels ( Including two optional orders), orders will be delivered gradually starting in 2023. Since the beginning of 2020, the cumulative number of new construction and modification orders for ships and platforms related to the global offshore wind power sector has reached 34. Excluding smaller wind power operation and maintenance ships, orders related to the offshore wind power sector have accounted for the total number of offshore engineering orders (52 ) one-third.

Offshore wind power sector orders grow rapidly

New orders in the offshore wind power sector, which has grown rapidly in recent years, have become one of the few bright spots in the sluggish offshore market. According to data from Clarksons Research, there have been a total of 783 new construction and modification orders for offshore wind power-related ships and platforms around the world since 2005; according to functional division, there are 88 orders for self-elevating installation platforms mainly used for offshore wind power construction (accounting for the total orders 11% of the total volume) and 81 other offshore construction and support devices (10%), 59 wind power operation and maintenance mother ships (8%) and 482 wind power operation and maintenance ships (62%) used for wind farm operation and maintenance, and others There are 73 offshore wind power related devices (including exploration devices, etc.) (9%). Excluding wind power operation and maintenance ships (due to their small size and large number), the number of new orders for ships in the offshore wind power sector since 2005 has accounted for more than 10% of the overall offshore market orders.
